Laser therapy

What is a laser?

Laser therapy – focused light for targeted application

Put simply, a laser is artificially focused light with a uniform wavelength. Many people are already familiar with laser applications from other fields – such as ophthalmology or surgery.

Depending on the purpose, lasers with different wavelengths (nanometers) and energy (watts) are used:

  • High-energy lasers are used, for example, in surgical procedures on the eye or spine.
  • Low-energy therapeutic lasers are used to relieve pain, reduce inflammation, and promote tissue regeneration.

In our practice, we exclusively use therapeutic lasers – gentle, painless and targeted to support your healing.

What effect does a laser have on tissue?

  1. Stimulation (acceleration of cell proliferation, improvement and increase of cell metabolism, stimulation of the mitochondria, the energy suppliers of the cell)
  2. Increased lymphatic and venous microcirculation (thereby reducing peritendinous edema, the inflammatory response and improving tissue supply)
  3. Changes in pain perception of superficial pain receptors (increase in pain threshold due to temperature increase of skin receptors)

Laser therapy stimulates important regulatory processes in the body and has the following effects.

  • Anti-inflammatory
  • Reduces swelling (edema)
  • Acceleration of lymphatic drainage
  • Promotes blood circulation
  • Promotes wound healing
  • Pain reliever

Which laser is used in our practice?

Therapeutic laser – targeted effect with the Opton device

In our practice, we use the Opton laser from Zimmer, a modern therapeutic laser with variable energy density. The device allows for targeted application – even in deeper tissue layers.

The Opton laser uses two different wavelengths, each with a specific biological effect:

  • 980 nm: pain-relieving
  • 810 nm: stimulates cell regeneration and improves microcirculation

Both wavelengths are applied simultaneously, resulting in an optimal synergy of effects. Power output ranges from 3 to 7 watts, depending on the application, and can be individually adjusted.

Laser therapy – safe and versatile

Laser therapy is a safe and well-tolerated procedure that is specifically used for inflamed tissue such as muscles, tendons and joints.

Furthermore, it is used in the following:

  • Pain therapy (e.g., as an acupuncture laser)
  • Treatment of injuries
  • Therapy for poorly healing wounds and ulcers
  • Treatment of inflammatory skin and mucous membrane diseases

Laser therapy supports healing, relieves pain and promotes blood circulation – all without surgical procedures or medication.

Applications of laser therapy

Laser therapy can be used to support and promote healing in a variety of conditions, including:

  • sprains
  • Inflammation (e.g., muscles, tendons, joints)
  • Strains and muscle fiber tears
  • Tendon overuse
  • Hematomas and edema
  • Tennis elbow / Golfer's elbow
  • Achilles tendonitis
  • Heel pain, with or without heel spurs
  • Herniated disc (cervical spine / thoracic spine / lumbar spine)
