In both acute and chronic herniated discs, anti-inflammatory medications are injected directly into the area surrounding the herniated disc and the inflammation. This reduces the inflammation and swelling.

Therefore, a herniated disc rarely requires traditional surgery today to be successfully treated and achieve pain relief. On the contrary, since the risk of adhesions and the associated often long-lasting and severe discomfort is quite high after surgery, an intervention should only be considered in cases of paralysis or when symptoms cannot be improved by conservative therapy.
