Hyaluronic acid therapy

SYNVISC is a single injection specifically developed for the treatment of symptoms of osteoarthritis in the knee and hip. Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a naturally occurring molecule that provides lubrication and shock absorption in a healthy joint.

SYNVISC is a clear, flexible gel containing high concentrations of HA (hyaluronic acid). It is injected into the affected joint to relieve pain and restore the lubricating and shock-absorbing properties of the synovial fluid, thereby improving joint function and quality of life.

How is it that one injection is sufficient when three to five injections per treatment cycle are necessary when using other hyaluronic acid preparations?

We use an Opton laser from Zimmer. This device offers variable energy density and can be used in deeper tissue layers. Two wavelengths with different biological effects are available. The longer wavelength (980 nm) has a pain-relieving effect, while the shorter wavelength (810 nm) stimulates cell repair processes and microcirculation. Both wavelengths are used simultaneously. The power output ranges from 3 to 7 watts.

How does SYNVISC work?

SYNVISC contains a high concentration of hyaluronic acid (HA), which mimics the effects of natural hyaluronic acid. It restores the natural level of HA that has decreased due to the progression of osteoarthritis. HA is known to influence pain perception and possesses viscoelastic properties (i.e., viscosity and elasticity), which allows it to provide cushioning and shock absorption within the joint. Through its ability to bind water, hyaluronic acid acts as a lubricant for all moving joint components.

Can I also receive SYNVISC treatment for my hip osteoarthritis?

Yes, the mode of action of SYNVISC has proven successful in treating osteoarthritis of both the hip and knee joints.

How is this treatment performed?

SYNVISC is administered via a single injection, for example into the knee joint, using an injection needle. The entire procedure takes approximately 15 minutes and is performed under MRI guidance to ensure precise placement of the medication within the joint.

Is the treatment painful?

We use a local anesthetic for the injection before administering SYNVISC to make the procedure as comfortable as possible.

Can the treatment be repeated?

Yes, the treatment can be repeated whenever desired or necessary.
